Bored in class?
You keep looking at your phone, waiting for the time to match the “end time” of your current class. Everytime you look, the time seems to pass slower, your eyes heavier and your eagerness for that after class nap gets unbearable. You’re so bored in class, you’ve exhausted the imaginary scenario’s in your head and are now turning to the internet to generate some ideas.
Well here’s a few.
Prerequisite’s
If you’re in college, I’m sorry for triggering you. Prerequisite’s are a painful word that, in my theory, are why a lot of 4 year degrees turn to 6. Or well, at least they were for me, my siblings and several of my friends who did go to college. If you’re in high school, you may not know yet, but you will. They’re inescapable.
ANYWAYS… enough with the dramatics. Before we get you away from being bored in class until you’re out of class, let’s make sure we have a few bases covered since the content of the course may not be important to you, but your grade definitely is. So, can you check the following items off your list?
- Are you setup to at least get a B on the upcoming test?
- A B allows you some cushion to still miss a few for later tests, such as the final exam.
- Do you have all the material in one place to reference later?
- This can be your notes, friends notes, textbook, a reason to talk to that cute girl in class you’ve been working up the nerve to talk to all semester. Anything.
- Will you get on the teacher’s bad side?
- This is important for point B. A valuable lesson you will learn through school is how much more people are willing to work with you, if they like you. This will go along way on the first bullet point, as well as help you build contingencies if you bomb the test, such as make up exams or extra credit.
Things to do if you’re bored in class
Now, if you’re bored in class, don’t do what I did and get caught playing the pokemon games during the “Study Hour” that we were given to prepare for an upcoming test. Also, don’t get caught with a crude, pencil drawn image of a man’s second brain that you were given by the cute girl next to you in class and now have to do an improv show-and-tell of how that is actually not a man’s hidden dragon, but rather a picture of Spongebob and Patrick’s hypothetical child.
Instead, do something that I’m that belongs in a category that I’m calling “Productive Boredom”. This means working on a simple skill that interests you. Here’s a few ideas:
Doodle
This is a low-hanging fruit that you’ve probably already considered. Moving on.
Build a business plan
This is the opposite side of the scale. This fruit is high-hanging, but it’s a good exercise as learning to think and approach problems with a business first mindset will help get you far in whatever career you have, whether it is actually starting your own business or working your way up the corporate ladder. Banks love it. Managers love it. Crises hate it since you’ll be able to remain cool, calm and collected to problem solve your way out of them.
Write down what you’d rather be doing
I have a journal on Amazon where you can do just that, with a second one on the way! Shameless plug HERE.
Alternatively, you can write these down in a notes app on your phone, or the old-fashioned way of pen and pad. This is a good exercise for diving deep into your brain wrinkles mind to discover that since you’re bored in class, where you would rather be. Phase 2 would be figuring out the steps to get there.
Play Devil’s Advocate
This one I wouldn’t recommend doing openly, but it was something that I did frequently in courses. I’d challenge everything I’m being told so I could figure out how to reverse-engineer it and rebuild it for other problems that I might be facing. If you’re not looking to take on anymore stress, I recommend avoiding this one.
Find a cerebral hobby
Your legs and mind are your strongest muscles. Figure out a fun way to exercise them. Whether it’s puzzles, sudoku, or protecting the last stronghold on earth from a zombie outbreak.
