Morning people…
We are not the same. You wake up looking for your next adventure and ready to get the day started. I wake up wondering why and ready to jump into episode 2 of the dream I was having. Then, I refuse to get out of bed until I’m satisfied that I’m no longer able to get any sleep. I’m jealous of you.
Why don’t I want to get out of bed?
I wasn’t kidding earlier. Genuinely, some of my dreams have me more hooked than most popular TV shows. Then, right at the climax or resolution my alarm slowly makes it’s way in, followed by panic, followed by me jumping out of bed thinking I’m late for work.
Another reason was the lack of incentive. I’d lie there wondering what’s the purpose of getting out of bed. Sure, I need to get up to do things, but why? Is it just to get ready for work? I don’t want to go to work, but I have bills to pay and nobody else to pay them for me.
So what made me want to get out of bed?
Well, technically I still refuse to get out of bed in the morning. Instead of laying there for the usual hour though, I’ve managed to cut it down to 5-10 minutes. I’m still not ready to talk to anybody for the first hour of my day, but at least I’m ready to be productive.
The secret?
I started spending the morning on doing thins for me. To call it a routine would give it too much credit. However, I do have almost a checklist of things that I like to do in the morning that I feel benefit me in some way. This includes:
- Playing Wordle (I recently discovered it and it’s awesome)
- NYT small crowssword
- Easy Sudoku
- Connections
- NYT Tiles
These help me get my brain going, but I also genuinely find them fun.
Uh-oh, there’s no time
There’s usually one day a week where I wake up and feel the exact same way. That’s a okay!
You don’t have to do them first thing in the morning. Just promise yourself you’ll do something that you want to do the first chance you get. This is the case for me at least once a week, due to early meetings or even sleeping in sometimes. Ironically enough, these are some of my better mornings since I have something to look forward to when things slow down. Instead of counting down 8 hours waiting to clock out, I’m counting down 1 or 2 hours waiting to play my morning games.
This has been a huge help for my mental and helped me to get back on the saddle with How to Have a Better Day.
So what can you do?
That depends on what you like. My recommendation is that it’s something quick though and it doesn’t take more than an hour. This will allow you to see whatever you choose all the way to the end.
For example, if you decide to cook breakfast then try finding new 30 minute breakfast recipes to try out, then send me some.
For gaming, I have a lot of fun with the NYT Games, but I know my friends also like to play Genshin for 15 minutes to complete their dailies.
There’s plenty of options, you just need to ask yourself, “What do you want?“
